Long Term Time Lapse

In 2020, humanity faced one of the most formidable challenges imaginable: the global onslaught of the COVID-19 virus. Amidst unprecedented uncertainty, a ray of opportunity emerged when VME Infrastructure, India's premier precast concrete manufacturing company, approached us. They presented a project unlike any we had undertaken before—an endeavor we were unfamiliar with. The task at hand was to create a time-lapse video showcasing the construction of a theater floor. This floor had an astonishing deadline of just three months, utilizing VME Infrastructure's innovative precast products.

Embarking on a time-lapse project amid active construction posed numerous hurdles:

  • Ensuring the security of cameras and equipment against theft.

  • Safeguarding the gear from potential damage.

  • Developing a weatherproof system capable of withstanding rain, wind, and extreme heat.

  • Establishing a fail-safe mechanism that would continue capturing footage despite prolonged periods or electronic overheating.

  • Navigating the challenges of procuring equipment during the pandemic, when imports were halted and even basic supplies were scarce.

Determined and apprehensive, we embraced this challenge. Both our enthusiasm and trepidation fueled our efforts.

We initiated thorough research, combining appropriate equipment, scientific calculations, and some customized components to execute the project. While the blueprint existed on paper, its practical viability remained uncertain.

Drawing from our collective experience spanning over 15 years, as well as the engineering acumen of Sukil—who possesses a more scientifically inclined mind—we managed to procure an intervalometer from the US. This crucial resource allowed us to create a structure for long-term time-lapse photography. The day of its completion and the commencement of shooting filled us with elation. Despite our prior work with renowned brands on large-scale projects, this endeavor pushed us beyond our comfort zone. Witnessing its successful continuation for three months, punctuated by occasional site visits, filled us with a sense of triumph.

The resulting video stands as a testament to the collaboration of two minds, countless hours of effort, and a four-month-long shooting process.

Restoring History

At the outset of my photography career, I was presented with a unique opportunity to undertake a remarkable project. I had the privilege to collaborate with the Madras Regimental Centre, a distinguished regiment of the Indian National Army, in restoring images that traced back to their inception. The images, preserved in print format, dated as far back as the First World War. During the few months I spent at their premises in Wellington, nestled in the picturesque Nilgiris, I felt as though I was residing within rooms steeped in history. I encountered a captivating array of rare and intriguing photographs – snapshots of prisoners of war, captured flags, triumphant moments, warfare scenes, and portraits of the leaders and fallen heroes.

Dealing with the framed pictures posed a particular challenge. Capturing them while encased in glass frames was intricate and technically demanding. Dislodging them from their frames was a perilous endeavor, carrying the risk of irrevocable loss. The task demanded meticulous precision and care, for even a minor error could translate into the forfeiture of an invaluable historical artifact.

The color photographs, though relatively more recent, still required careful handling. Regardless, I recognized the profound significance of the undertaking and approached it with dedication, all the while enjoying the company of the spirited soldiers across various ranks.

This project holds a special place in my heart, being one of the first large-scale endeavors I conceived and accomplished. The restored images now find their home at the MRC museum, meticulously organized into 36 albums. It fills me with immense pride to know that I have become a part of this history; each album proudly bears my name as a testament to my contribution.

Industrial Photography & Filming

Among the various types of photography and videography we engage in, there's one that truly stands out as both thrilling and captivating – Industrial Photography. This unique genre presents us with not only challenging circumstances but also an array of distinctive experiences each time.

From the realm of leather to the realm of lorries, from construction sites to the sleek surfaces of cars, from government projects to the intricate workings of small-scale cottage industries, we've been fortunate enough to witness and learn about a wide spectrum of processes and mechanisms.

Undoubtedly, Industrial Photography introduces its own set of challenges. It demands a deep comprehension of the inner workings and processes of every factory we step into. Maneuvering around machinery and robots requires careful consideration, as safety is a paramount concern. The intense heat, unfamiliar smells, and the dirt generated by certain industrial processes can even unsettle the sturdiest of individuals.

Yet, embedded within these challenges lies a treasure trove of opportunity. Crafting exceptional industrial images involves a dance of lighting, composition, and a profound understanding of the subject. What might seem mundane or even coarse at first glance can serve as a blank canvas onto which we can paint beauty. We relish the chance to transform the raw essence of these subjects into captivating visuals that capture attention.

Moreover, the allure of creating films that unravel industrial processes is irresistible. Striking the balance between accurate representation and visual appeal is a stimulating puzzle. Our passion for accuracy and aesthetics drives us to push ourselves even in the face of demanding conditions.

Industrial Photography and Filming aren't just about capturing machinery or processes; they're about revealing the artistry hidden within the world of manufacturing. Each image and frame become an exploration of how ordinary elements can come together to create something extraordinary. So, when you see these images or films, know that they aren't just about factories and machinery – they're a testament to the beauty that can be found in the most unexpected places.
